Attorneys in Virginia have an aspirational goal of dedicating at least 2% of their annual work to pro bono (free legal) services. In our 20 years at ReeseLaw, P.C., we have established a more expansive view of the importance of working within our communities to help those in need. Not only has Kate Reese been named to the Virginia State Bar Pro Bono Honor Roll, but all of our attorneys find ways to deliver free or low-cost services to ensure that Virginia residents have access to legal counsel and support in legal situations.
Among other activities, Kate conducts family law conciliations for the Fairfax Circuit Court. As an experienced family law attorney, she makes herself available to the Court and to parties to resolve their disputes with self-determination rather than a Court’s ruling. In addition to being a free service, conciliation has the added benefit of reaching an agreement in contentious matters like divorce and child custody without the expense of resources and time associated with a court hearing or trial. Kate’s decades of experience allow her to assist the parties to understand the stakes and the options at issue in their dispute.
In addition, Kate serves as a mentor through the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML) Mentorship Committee to foster family law attorneys’ knowledge and skills.
Finally, Kate continues her work on the Virginia Women Attorneys Association (VWAA) grassroots “You Be the Judge” program, across the Commonwealth, which informs law students and attorneys about the necessary steps to become a judge in Virginia.
Mario Williams has recently prepared two clients to represent themselves in Court, when they fell upon circumstances that no longer allowed them to afford representation. Both clients achieved successful outcomes and were extremely appreciative. Additionally, Mr. Williams contributed pro bono hours this year, representing a family with three young children who were in an unstable situation and are now in a settled, loving home.
Every year, our entire firm, including staff and attorneys, selects charitable organizations to which we donate in time and treasure. We select our charitable giving in large part through our clients, learning about the impact of life issues on them and other members of the community. Here are some of ways in which the ReeseLaw team has contributed in 2024:
A unifying theme of our donations is a commitment to donate to places where most of the money goes to the cause, using sites like Charity Navigator and GuideStar to research how funds are allocated.
ReeseLaw is proud of its commitment to giving back. As we approach the holidays this year, we plan to continue sharing our blessings with others. We believe that this commitment makes us better lawyers and better people. If you want to work with a firm that is dedicated to its clients, not only as litigants; but as unique individuals with interests, needs, hopes and dreams well outside of the litigation, contact us today.
